Can people tell because it is the wrong shade? It sounds like it. If it does not match your skin exactly, people will always be able to tell you have it on. If it is matching and just not covering enough, you can put a concealer with salicylic acid in it on first. You may also want to look at this powder foundation from Clinique: http://www.clinique.com/templates/produc鈥?/a> or this liquid one: http://www.clinique.com/templates/produc鈥?/a> They can match your skin for you at the counter.
If you use your fingers, make sure they are clean, or make sure you are using a clean sponge so you won't be spreading bacteria around your face.
